Long Beach was built in waves, from early Craftsman to twenties Spanish Revival to big postwar tracts on the east side. A third of homes predate 1950, and the chimney's age tends to tell which questions matter: old mortar, or a later masonry or factory-built unit. Close to the beach and harbor, salt air quickly works on steel caps and flashing. The Newport-Inglewood Fault broke here in 1933, hard enough to lead to the Field Act for school safety, and brick from that era deserves a careful look.
