Learn MoreWhat the roof check finds in Bell Gardens
Dust Bowl migrants were among the families who settled this subdivided farmland in small homes during the 1930s. Few households own here, about 1 in 5, and a chimney that old on a rented house can go a long time with no one looking at its top. Low morning clouds in early summer and warm afternoons keep things mild on the basin floor, with freezes rare. The real masonry test was the 1987 Whittier Narrows quake, which damaged older brick across the San Gabriel Valley.
The Houses
On our Bell Gardens visits: 1930s family homes on former farm lots, site-built brick chimneys, small houses and apartments.
On the Roof
Top courses of site-built brick, mortar joints worn by age, the crown, and whether a cap is there at all.
Which Metal
Damp mornings rust bare steel slowly, so when a cap or flashing piece fails we suggest stainless over a galvanized replacement.
Same Day, Nearby
Bell Gardens visits often share a day with Huntington Park, Maywood, Commerce.
