Malibu is the longest drive on our schedule, so we group visits by stretch of coast and fill the day. A beach house on PCH gets the hardest salt exposure we see, and its cap, chase cover and flashing are checked first and photographed up close. Up the canyons, the same visit gives more time to the spark arrestor. The Woolsey Fire in November 2018 destroyed hundreds of homes in Malibu, and the ocean side of the city sits in salt spray most of the year. A Malibu roof check looks for both at once: mesh with rust holes in it, and screens that no longer stop an ember.
