What's Included
When a gas fireplace will not light, will not stay lit, or puts out weak heat, the culprit is usually a failed thermocouple, thermopile, gas valve, or ignition module. Our technicians trace the fault by hand on gas log sets, direct-vent inserts, and ventless units, working on units for homes in Santa Monica and Santa Monica Bay and the Westside.
A Homeowner on Kanan Dume Corridor Called After Santa Ana Winds Blew Debris Straight Into Her Gas Fireplace Vent Cap
Late last October, a Brentwood homeowner along the Kanan Dume corridor tried lighting her gas fireplace for the first time that season. The pilot light clicked but wouldn't hold. She assumed the thermocouple had gone bad, which is a common enough failure on direct-vent units older than eight or nine years. But when she mentioned that the last round of Santa Ana winds had rattled her cap hard enough to hear it from the living room, we asked her to hold off on using the unit entirely until we could get out there. Debris-blocked vent caps on gas fireplaces don't just cause ignition failure. They create backdraft conditions that push carbon monoxide into your home. That's not a repair you put off.
Her situation isn't unusual for the corridors that run between Kanan Dume and Latigo Canyon. Those east-facing hillside exposures catch the full force of Santa Ana gusts, which drive leaves, grit, and small branch material directly into vent terminations. Homeowners closer to Encinal Canyon deal with the same pattern. The cap itself may look intact from ground level, but bent louvers or a shifted rain collar can let enough debris accumulate inside the vent to restrict exhaust flow. When that happens, the unit's safety sensors shut the gas valve down. If the sensors are worn or corroded, they may not. Either way, you need someone on the roof before you need someone diagnosing the pilot assembly. We scheduled her for the next morning.
What the Inspection Found: A Damaged Cap, a Failing Thermopile, and a Vent System Full of Canyon Debris
We started on the roof. The vent cap's mesh screen was packed with dried chaparral fragments and fine sand, reducing exhaust clearance by roughly 60 percent. Two of the four cap louvers were bent inward from wind pressure, which had created a funnel effect that actually accelerated debris collection. We cleared the blockage, replaced the cap with a wind-resistant model rated for high-exposure installations, and then moved inside to the firebox. The thermopile was producing 280 millivolts under load. Most gas valves need at least 325 to open reliably, and hers required 350. That's a textbook thermopile failure, not a thermocouple issue. We replaced it on the spot. Per NFPA 211, any gas appliance showing signs of vent obstruction warrants a Level 2 inspection with camera verification, so we scoped the full vent run to confirm no interior damage or hidden blockage remained.
The distinction between thermopile and thermocouple failures matters because the parts cost roughly the same but the diagnostic path is different. A thermocouple senses whether the pilot is lit. A thermopile generates the voltage that actually opens the gas valve. When a homeowner near Latigo Canyon or Encinal Canyon tells us the pilot lights fine but the burner won't kick on, we test thermopile output first. If you're dealing with a gas fireplace that won't ignite or stay lit after heavy winds, don't assume the problem is inside the firebox. The vent system and cap integrity need to be confirmed before any internal repair makes sense. For deeper firebox or burner issues, our full fireplace repair service covers what falls outside standard cleaning and cap work. And if you use a gas appliance in your home, the CPSC's guidance on carbon monoxide prevention is worth reading.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Santa Monica
Santa Monica is where Bayside works from, so visits here are the easiest to fit in. Close to the beach, the cap and the chase cover come first, because salt carried in on the onshore breeze settles on the top of the chimney every day. North of Montana and up toward Sunset Park, more of the visit goes into older brick and the flue.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Pacific Palisades
The Palisades Fire in January 2025 burned through much of Pacific Palisades, and a large part of the neighborhood is being rebuilt. A new house often has a factory-built fireplace or a gas unit with a metal flue, while a house that survived may have a chimney that sat through the heat and smoke. We inspect both kinds, and on a rebuild we check the cap, chase cover and termination before the roofing closes in around them.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Brentwood
Brentwood is a short drive up San Vicente from Santa Monica, and its houses often have two or three fireplaces. We look at every flue on the roof, not only the one the family lights, and the rust note lists each cap on its own line so you can see which one is going first.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Malibu
Malibu is the longest drive on our schedule, so we group visits by stretch of coast and fill the day. A beach house on PCH gets the hardest salt exposure we see, and its cap, chase cover and flashing are checked first and photographed up close. Up the canyons, the same visit gives more time to the spark arrestor.

Gas Fireplace Repair in West Hollywood
West Hollywood has many older apartment buildings where several units share one chimney stack. On those roofs we check each flue and note which unit it serves, so the owner gets one report with every fireplace on it. In a bungalow the visit is shorter: cap, crown, flashing, then the sweep.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills homes often have more chimneys than the household uses, and the ones nobody lights get the least attention. We check every stack from the roof, then sweep and inspect the fireplaces in use. The rust note lists each cap and chase cover by where it sits on the roof, so a contractor or house manager can find it.
