Learn MoreWhat the roof check finds in West Hollywood
West Hollywood has many older apartment buildings where several units share one chimney stack. On those roofs we check each flue and note which unit it serves, so the owner gets one report with every fireplace on it. In a bungalow the visit is shorter: cap, crown, flashing, then the sweep. West Hollywood sits far enough from the ocean that rust works slowly here, so the roof check spends more time on mortar and crowns. Chimneys from the 1920s and 1930s have been through several large earthquakes, and a crack at the roofline is the first sign we look for.
The Houses
On our West Hollywood visits: 1920s and 1930s Spanish apartment courts, Craftsman bungalows on the side streets, and newer condo buildings with gas fireplaces.
On the Roof
Each flue on a shared stack, the crown and mortar at the roofline, and the caps that tenants have never seen from below.
Which Metal
Rust works slowly this far from the water, so here the metal matters less than the mortar. A cap replacement is usually about a missing screen, not corrosion.
