A Brentwood Homeowner Near Kanan Dume Corridor Called About Debris Packed Under Her Chimney Cap After Last October's Santa Ana Event

She'd been smelling something acrid every time she lit a fire. Not smoke, exactly, but a sharp, bitter odor that hung in the living room long after the flames died down. Her house sits in the Kanan Dume corridor, tucked into one of those oak-lined lots where the Santa Ana winds funnel hard from the northeast every fall. After the October windstorm, she noticed dried leaves, bark fragments, and what looked like bird nesting material piled on the cap screen. She wasn't sure if the debris had gotten inside the flue or just clogged the exterior. What worried her most: she'd used the fireplace four or five times since the storm without thinking twice about it. She called Bayside Chimney Contractors asking for a sweep and an honest answer about whether she'd caused any damage.

This call is more common than you'd think in Brentwood, especially along the Latigo Canyon and Encinal Canyon hillsides where wind-driven debris collects fast. A chimney cap with a mesh screen is supposed to keep leaves, animals, and embers contained. But Santa Ana gusts can force dry organic material through damaged or corroded mesh, and that material settles on top of existing creosote deposits inside the flue. If you've burned wood even a handful of times on top of that buildup, you're accelerating the jump from 1st-degree creosote (dusty, easy to brush) to 2nd-degree (tar-like flakes that cling to the liner). She needed a sweep to assess the cap, clear the flue, and tell her what grade of creosote she was actually dealing with.

What We Found Inside the Flue: 2nd-Degree Creosote Mixed with Wind-Driven Debris, and a Cap Screen That Had Already Failed

Our technician ran a Level 1 visual inspection first, per NFPA 211 standards. The cap's mesh screen had two tears along the windward side, consistent with repeated stress from Santa Ana gusts. Inside the flue, roughly the top third was packed with a mix of dried leaf matter and 2nd-degree creosote deposits. That combination is a real problem. Organic debris mixed into tar-like creosote creates fuel that ignites at lower temperatures than creosote alone. The lower two-thirds of the flue had lighter 1st-degree buildup, which told us she hadn't been burning heavily enough to coat the whole liner. We swept the full flue with rotary brushes, removed the debris by hand where it had matted into the creosote, and replaced the damaged cap with a wind-rated stainless steel unit sized for Brentwood's hillside exposure along Encinal Canyon and the surrounding ridgelines.

After the sweep, we documented everything with photos and gave her a written report she can reference before next season. For Brentwood homeowners who burn wood between November and March, we recommend scheduling your sweep in early fall, before the Santa Ana season packs new debris into a flue that already has last winter's creosote. That timing matters more here than in inland neighborhoods where wind-driven debris isn't a factor. Every sweep follows CSIA protocols for creosote grading, cap integrity checks, and flue documentation. If you're in the Kanan Dume corridor or Latigo Canyon area and haven't had your cap inspected since the last wind event, book a sweep before you light your first fire this year.

Chimney Sweep in Santa Monica

Santa Monica is where Bayside works from, so visits here are the easiest to fit in. Close to the beach, the cap and the chase cover come first, because salt carried in on the onshore breeze settles on the top of the chimney every day. North of Montana and up toward Sunset Park, more of the visit goes into older brick and the flue.

Chimney Sweep in Pacific Palisades

The Palisades Fire in January 2025 burned through much of Pacific Palisades, and a large part of the neighborhood is being rebuilt. A new house often has a factory-built fireplace or a gas unit with a metal flue, while a house that survived may have a chimney that sat through the heat and smoke. We inspect both kinds, and on a rebuild we check the cap, chase cover and termination before the roofing closes in around them.

Chimney Sweep in Brentwood

Brentwood is a short drive up San Vicente from Santa Monica, and its houses often have two or three fireplaces. We look at every flue on the roof, not only the one the family lights, and the rust note lists each cap on its own line so you can see which one is going first.

Chimney Sweep in Malibu

Malibu is the longest drive on our schedule, so we group visits by stretch of coast and fill the day. A beach house on PCH gets the hardest salt exposure we see, and its cap, chase cover and flashing are checked first and photographed up close. Up the canyons, the same visit gives more time to the spark arrestor.

Chimney Sweep in West Hollywood

West Hollywood has many older apartment buildings where several units share one chimney stack. On those roofs we check each flue and note which unit it serves, so the owner gets one report with every fireplace on it. In a bungalow the visit is shorter: cap, crown, flashing, then the sweep.

Chimney Sweep in Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills homes often have more chimneys than the household uses, and the ones nobody lights get the least attention. We check every stack from the roof, then sweep and inspect the fireplaces in use. The rust note lists each cap and chase cover by where it sits on the roof, so a contractor or house manager can find it.
