The Palisades Fire in January 2025 burned through much of Pacific Palisades, and a large part of the neighborhood is being rebuilt. A new house often has a factory-built fireplace or a gas unit with a metal flue, while a house that survived may have a chimney that sat through the heat and smoke. We inspect both kinds, and on a rebuild we check the cap, chase cover and termination before the roofing closes in around them. The bluffs take sea air straight off the water, and the canyons behind them carry dry wind in the fall. So every Palisades roof gets two checks: rust on the cap and chase cover, and a spark arrestor screen with no gap an ember could pass through.

On the Roof
On a rebuild: the termination cap, the chase cover and the flashing before the roof is finished around them. On an older chimney: heat cracks in the crown, a warped cap, and smoke residue down the flue.

The bluffs catch sea air off the water, so stainless caps and covers are worth the step up here. A spark arrestor screen with fine, intact mesh matters as much as the metal.
