Learn MoreWhat the roof check finds in La Canada Flintridge
Older Flintridge estates sit on sloping lots, where brick chimneys can stand far taller on the downhill side than they look from the street. Extra height means more exposed mortar, so we photograph every face from the roof. Heavy foothill rain and big temperature swings keep working at crowns, and summers run hot and dry. The 1971 San Fernando quake was felt hard here, and the 2010 debris flows are a reminder of how much water these slopes can carry.
The Houses
On our La Canada Flintridge visits: period Spanish and Monterey estates on Flintridge streets, tall brick chimneys on sloping lots, mostly owner-occupied houses.
On the Roof
Downhill face of tall brick stacks, crown after foothill storms, flashing, and the mortar on anything that stood through 1971.
Which Metal
Salt is not the question here; a heavy stainless cap with fine mesh fits a tall foothill chimney that takes wind and rain.
