What's Included
A fireplace insert slides into an existing masonry firebox and sharply improves how much heat you actually keep. Our technicians fit gas, wood-burning, and electric inserts by hand across Santa Monica and Santa Monica Bay and the Westside, running the liner, venting, and gas line work the installation calls for.
A Kanan Dume Corridor Homeowner Called After Santa Ana Winds Packed Her Firebox with Canyon Debris
Last October, a homeowner on the Kanan Dume corridor called us after a three-day Santa Ana event. She'd opened her damper to light the first fire of the season and found the firebox half-filled with dried brush, shredded eucalyptus bark, and fragments of a rusted chimney cap screen. Wind-driven debris had blown straight down the flue. She could see daylight through a gap where the cap once sat flush against the crown. Her concern was reasonable: she wanted to install a gas insert to avoid dealing with creosote, but she also worried the flue itself was compromised. Her 1970s-era masonry fireplace had never been scoped with a camera, and she had no idea what the liner looked like below the visible damage.
We hear versions of this call every fall from Brentwood homeowners along the Latigo Canyon and Encinal Canyon corridors, where Santa Ana gusts regularly exceed 50 mph. The pattern is consistent. Caps corrode or get dislodged by wind. Debris accumulates inside the flue, sometimes blocking it entirely. The homeowner assumes a fireplace insert will fix everything, but the real issue is what's happening above and around the insert connection point. A gas insert vented through a damaged flue is a carbon monoxide risk. A wood insert feeding into a cracked clay tile liner is a fire risk. Before we talk about insert options, we need to know what the chimney can actually handle. That starts with getting on the roof and running a camera down the flue, not with picking out a unit from a showroom catalog.
What a Level 2 Inspection Revealed and How We Matched the Right Insert to a Wind-Damaged Flue
We performed a Level 2 inspection per NFPA 211 standards, which includes a camera scan of the full flue interior. The results were typical for a Kanan Dume corridor chimney exposed to decades of Santa Ana cycles: two cracked clay liner tiles in the upper third, a deteriorated mortar crown with no drip edge, and a cap that had corroded through at three of four attachment points. The firebox itself was structurally sound. We recommended a new stainless steel liner sized for the insert she wanted, a poured crown repair, and a wind-rated cap bolted to the new crown. For her situation, a direct-vent gas insert made the most sense. It uses its own coaxial vent pipe inside the new liner, which means combustion air comes from outside and exhaust exits through a sealed system. No interaction with the damaged clay tiles at all.
If she had preferred a wood-burning insert, the liner requirement would have been the same, but the insert itself would need EPA certification to meet current emissions standards. Brentwood sits in the South Coast Air Quality Management District, so wood-burning restrictions apply on designated no-burn days. We walk every customer through this tradeoff. Gas inserts give you 75-85% efficiency ratings and work on no-burn days. EPA-certified wood inserts burn cleaner than an open fireplace but still fall under AQMD rules. Electric inserts skip the liner question entirely but produce no real heat output worth measuring. For homes along Encinal Canyon and Latigo Canyon where cap integrity is an ongoing maintenance item due to wind exposure, we often suggest pairing any insert installation with a fireplace remodel that addresses the full system from firebox to cap.
You can review the current list of EPA certified wood stoves and fireplace inserts if a wood-burning unit is what you want. We'll confirm compatibility with your existing masonry dimensions and liner specs before you commit to a model.

Fireplace Inserts in Santa Monica
Santa Monica is where Bayside works from, so visits here are the easiest to fit in. Close to the beach, the cap and the chase cover come first, because salt carried in on the onshore breeze settles on the top of the chimney every day. North of Montana and up toward Sunset Park, more of the visit goes into older brick and the flue.

Fireplace Inserts in Pacific Palisades
The Palisades Fire in January 2025 burned through much of Pacific Palisades, and a large part of the neighborhood is being rebuilt. A new house often has a factory-built fireplace or a gas unit with a metal flue, while a house that survived may have a chimney that sat through the heat and smoke. We inspect both kinds, and on a rebuild we check the cap, chase cover and termination before the roofing closes in around them.

Fireplace Inserts in Brentwood
Brentwood is a short drive up San Vicente from Santa Monica, and its houses often have two or three fireplaces. We look at every flue on the roof, not only the one the family lights, and the rust note lists each cap on its own line so you can see which one is going first.

Fireplace Inserts in Malibu
Malibu is the longest drive on our schedule, so we group visits by stretch of coast and fill the day. A beach house on PCH gets the hardest salt exposure we see, and its cap, chase cover and flashing are checked first and photographed up close. Up the canyons, the same visit gives more time to the spark arrestor.

Fireplace Inserts in West Hollywood
West Hollywood has many older apartment buildings where several units share one chimney stack. On those roofs we check each flue and note which unit it serves, so the owner gets one report with every fireplace on it. In a bungalow the visit is shorter: cap, crown, flashing, then the sweep.

Fireplace Inserts in Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills homes often have more chimneys than the household uses, and the ones nobody lights get the least attention. We check every stack from the roof, then sweep and inspect the fireplaces in use. The rust note lists each cap and chase cover by where it sits on the roof, so a contractor or house manager can find it.
