Why Our Visits Start at the Top
Bayside Chimney Contractors works from Santa Monica, on the bay. Working this close to the water, you learn that a chimney does not wear out evenly. Salt carried in on the afternoon breeze settles on the cap, the crown and the flashing, and the marine layer keeps it damp. The firebox below can look fine while the screen on top has rusted through.
So every visit starts on the roof. We check the cap and its fasteners, the crown, the flashing where it meets the brick, and the chase cover on a metal chimney, and we photograph each one. Then we come down, sweep the flue and inspect it from the firebox up.
Before we leave you get a rust note: every metal part, a photo, and one of three marks, fine, watch it, or replace it. When a part needs replacing, the note names the metal. Near the beach that is usually 316 stainless or copper. Further inland, a standard stainless cap does the job.
