Fireplace Inspection in Brentwood: Written Report, Licensed Technicians

Last October, a homeowner off the Kanan Dume corridor called us after a three-day Santa Ana event. She'd tried to light her first fire of the season and noticed smoke rolling back into her living room within minutes. She assumed the damper was stuck. It wasn't. When she walked outside and looked up at the chimney, she could see leaves, small branches, and grit wedged into the cap screen. The mesh was partially collapsed on one side, bent inward by wind-driven debris. Her concern was carbon monoxide. She has two kids under five, and the smoke smell lingered in the hallway for hours after she put the fire out. She wanted someone out that week.

We hear versions of this call every fall from homeowners along Latigo Canyon and Encinal Canyon too. The Santa Ana winds funnel hard through those canyons, pushing chaparral debris, dried eucalyptus bark, and fine ash directly into chimney caps that weren't designed for that kind of volume. A damaged or clogged cap doesn't just block draft. It changes the pressure dynamics inside the firebox, forcing combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, back into living spaces. That's not a maintenance inconvenience. That's a safety failure. Her instinct to stop using the fireplace and call for an inspection was the right move.

We ran a Level 2 inspection per NFPA 211 standards, which includes a video scan of the flue interior. The cap damage was obvious and easy to document, but the real problems were inside the firebox. Two of the four refractory panels had vertical cracks running nearly their full height. Cracks like these let heat reach combustible framing behind the firebox wall. The clearance-to-combustibles gap in her 1980s-era Brentwood home measured just under two inches in spots, which is already tight. Cracked panels reduce that margin to almost nothing. We also found the damper plate corroded in an open position. It couldn't close fully, meaning conditioned air was leaking up the flue year-round, costing real money on every utility bill.

We replaced both cracked refractory panels, installed a new stainless steel chimney cap rated for high-wind exposure, and fitted a top-sealing damper that locks airtight when the fireplace isn't in use. The CPSC recommends CO detectors near every fireplace, and we confirmed hers were functional before we left.
